MALAKOFF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES OF 1956-1957
Can you believe……it has been 67 years since we had our commencement exercise? Reflecting upon this… think about it. We graduated in 1957 and here we are in 2024. 67 years earlier, the graduation date would have been…1890; so, the 2024 grads will look on our ’57 class, as we would have the 1890 class.
This is a list of our 1957 graduates:
Blanche Allen Wanda Willingham
Betty Brannon Henry Allen
Carolyn Cade Buster Carter
Geraldine Bowman Edwin Boyd
Betty Dillard Ben Garcia
Charlotte Evans William Giles
Sallye Dodson Don Henderson
Judy Farmer Clyde Humphries
Jill Fowler Harold Johnson
Martha Hughes James Leopard
La Jaun Hunter James Newell
Barbara Shumate Eddie Nokes
Patricia Sorrell Ronnie Stockman
Shirley Washburn Kenneth Carter
Mollie Williams
On this very special day, there were 29 of us, celebrating, some with sadness, others with enthusiastic relief, all with pride of accomplishment and looking forward to new things. In the fall of ’57, several of us decided to attend HCJC (Henderson County Junior College/Now Trinity Valley). By the 2nd semester, Eddie had enough of school and joined the Marines.
NOTE: Kenneth Andrews did not graduate with us, but he was always part of our ’57 Class
Jimmie Shumate left our class maybe before high school, but she has always felt that she was part of our class.
Mable Lois Rogers Simmons has also been a part of our class. At last report, she lives in Oklahoma.
Of the original 29 ’57 Graduates, as of May 30, 2024, the following are still here: Blanche Allen, Betty Dillard, Charlotte Evans, Jill Fowler, Martha Hughes, Barbara Shumate, Patricia Sorrelll, Shirley Washburn, William Giles and Don Henderson. The others still here are: Ken Andrews, Mable Rogers Simmons, Sallye Dodson (not sure about Sallye), Jimmie Shumate, The whereabouts of Clyde Corbin (Sonny) Humphries is unknown. The last report in 2007 he was in a nursing home in Galveston, Texas. Research has not revealed where he is now. Surprising how many “Clyde Corbin Humphries” that can be found, but so far not the correct one.
June Baggett is another who came to our 50th reunion, in fact she helped organize the 50th reunion. It is not known at this time where she is.
